Jesus’ death is never described in scripture as nor should it be thought of as an atonement. In the NT his death is described consistently as a propitiation.
The difference is that an atonement is a gesture made by a transgressor as an expression of remorse and an appeal for mercy. A propitiation is a gesture made by God to vindicate himself for showing mercy. In addition the death of Jesus ratified the new covenant with the houses of Israel and Judah.

I think of it as the “at one ment”. That is, it was an invitation of God towards men to accept the always open invitation to relationship.
